On the 27 May 2006, at around 5.50 am in the morning, the massive 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck Yogyakarta and surrounding areas in Central Java, Indonesia.The worst areas hit by the earthquake are the District of Bantul, Klaten, Gunung Kidul, Sleman and Kulon Progo.

The number of the victims as of 29 May 2006, 02.04 a.m., has reached more than 4.983 people died and tens of thousands injured. One Dutch nationality has been reported died. More than 90% of the houses and buildings in Bantul District, Yogyakarta has been leveled to the ground.

The number of people injured and the property damaged are still growing. The runway of the Adisucipto airport in Yogyakarta has been damaged by the quake, as well as the air traffic control tower. All flights to Yogyakarta have been diverted to the nearest airports in Solo and Semarang.

The President of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Mrs. Ani Yudhoyono, and the Indonesian Ministers have visited the areas affected by the Earthhquake. President Yudhoyono spent the night with the victims of the earthquake in Yogyakarta to make relief efforts coordination easier.

The Indonesian Government is deeply grateful that the international communities are quick to respond to the disaster. UN bodies the World Food Programs and UNICEF have sent aids to Indonesia. The US Government will donate US$100.000 through USAid and allocated emergency assistance worth US$2.5 billion. The Netherlands pledged Euro 1 million. The Government of Canada has committed US$1.8 million. The Government of Spain allocated Euro 500.000. Slovakia contributes to the EU aids which allocate the sum of Euro 3 million to the earthquake victims. The Australian Government pledged US$2.27 million. China, Pakistan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have already sent their aids to Indonesia.

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, in honour of the victims of the disaster, will open the book of condolence for public, at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, 51 Mudroňova, Bratislava, at the following times:
